Our Cedar Bark is the bark of the Calocedrus decurrens tree, better known as the California Incense Cedar.
Cedar Bark is some of the most unique, beautiful, and rare siding in the world. It can enhance any aesthetic, but works especially well on barns, cabins, sheds, and exterior feature walls. This durable material can last for up to 100 years and is both weather and insect resistant.
Each piece is pressure washed and treated with anti-mildew agents. Small holes and beetle tracks are cleaned up and filled as needed.
Our Standard Cedar Bark Siding is a beautiful mix of bark pieces of varied sizes. Standard pieces are the easiest to work with and install. Some of the pieces will contain burn marks from bark recovered from fire killed trees. You may request all Natural or all Burned as well for no additional cost, depending on our stock. Natural and burned pieces also look great together, so it’s not necessary to only get one kind or another.
Premium Cedar Bark Siding consists of larger and thicker pieces than Standard. Averaging more than 2 inches thick, some of the premium pieces can be as thick as six inches in places. These pieces retain the same beauty as our Standard pieces. In addition, these pieces are generally longer on average and taller than most standard pieces.
The most incredible option we provide. The same as the Premium Cedar Bark, only with the natural mosses still attached to the bark, adding a splash of green to the outside of the bark.
Cedar Bark is not a commercial product. As a result of this, each piece is unique. Every piece will be of a different length, height, and depth. The beauty of your wall will be enhanced due to the uniqueness of each piece working together.
Since the bark is harvested from already dead trees, it is common to find beetle tracks and holes in bark. The beetles feed on the cambium of the trees, the soft layer of wood directly beneath the bark. It is possible but very unlikely to find an insect on or in the product. Each bark piece is inspected, cleaned, and treated.
Cedar Bark is water resistant, but it is not perfect. Each piece will have a slight curve to it, meaning water is capable of getting beneath the bark. It is not possible or recommended to attempt to seal between the pieces of bark. Instead, the bark should be applied to the exterior of existing wood or composite siding. Since the bark won’t seal naturally, any moisture that gets behind the bark will drain or evaporate away.
Some pieces of bark contain small cracks and holes. Generally, cracked pieces are split apart into two different pieces before you ever see them. Some pieces retain small cracks due to their size. Other pieces will have small holes made from beetles or larger holes made from the branches of the Cedar tree itself.

Before installing Cedar Bark Siding, you may want to install Felt Paper onto the existing siding in order to minimize the appearance of any gaps, cracks, or holes in the bark. Most pieces will be able to be secured in place using 2 inch galvanized brad nails.
Thicker pieces, common among the Premium and Mossy boards, may require the use of other fasteners. Exterior Trim Screws are excellent for this. Trim Screws may also be used to finish securing any pieces that require additional fastening.

We are a very small, family run business based near the Sequoia National Forest in California. Our bark has been legally gathered from only two sources: timber industry waste or trees that die of natural causes. We never take the bark from a living tree and we never cut down a living tree.
Thank you for your interest in Sierra Bark Siding. We look forward to doing business with you.
